George Street Planters
As part of the ongoing transformation of George Street as Sydney’s primary pedestrian spine, JPW has been working with The City of Sydney on a suite of elements to form its hostile vehicle mitigation and planter strategy. Our design has transformed the broad requirements and aspirations into a simple, flexible, scalable, and modular solution that enhances the street’s civic character.
The multifunctional planters address hostile vehicle mitigation whilst offering seating, increased greening, and adaptability to the diverse environmental conditions along George Street, from shaded areas to full sun and high wind zones. The planters are arranged to establish a civic rhythm with groupings of three incorporating water storage and seating. Single units are located where access or additional planting is required.
Currently in evaluation phase, these prototypes have exceeded expectations, requiring minimal maintenance and long periods of no watering over months—far less than conventional alternatives. Future production planters can incorporate smart city sensors to deliver real-time data, enabling customised watering and reducing upkeep.
