Kent Street Underpass
Creating Connection, Character, and Comfort
The Kent Street underpass is a crucial pedestrian and cycle link connecting the city centre with Harbour North and Barangaroo. The site was previously characterised by a lack of character, with large empty spaces dominated by concrete and footpaths in poor condition. It felt isolated from surrounding streets, with inadequate wayfinding, limited access, and poor lighting at night, making it uninviting and difficult to navigate.
Our design simplifies the space by removing clutter and emphasising the architectural form of the curved walls. A consistent ground plane of subtly varied porphyry paving runs through the underpass, creating a clear and unified visual flow. Contrasting with the paving, a dense band of shade-loving low planting introduces vibrancy and life to the space. The use of mature transplanted Washingtonia robustas transforms the area into a surprising subterranean oasis, providing a welcoming contrast to the concrete environment.
JPW led the project from initial concept through stakeholder consultation, design approval, and tender documentation. The result is a more accessible, visually appealing, and characterful underpass that improves connection and safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Kent Street Underpass project highlights our expertise in transforming neglected urban spaces into functional, engaging environments.
