JPW in collaboration with Utzon Architects were appointed by the Sydney Opera House Trust to advise on future development works affecting the Sydney Opera House and its site. One of the first tasks was to establish, with Jorn Utzon, the design principles that will guide future works at the Sydney Opera House. The objectives were to safeguard the site for the benefit of future generations and to address the current practical limitations and the future design needs of a leading performing arts centre. The works include upgrading disabled access, tourist infrastructure, visitor and presenter facilities. The Utzon Design Principles and the Strategic Building Plan were developed and compiled by JPW with Utzon Architects in collaboration and were key documents in the Trust’s successful bid for World Heritage Listing which was granted in 2007.

I am delighted that Richard Johnson and his firm have been appointed to draw up a Masterplan and am confident that we can collaborate. In this way I’m sure the concept of the Sydney Opera House and its surroundings will be protected in the best possible way

Between 2001 and 2009 JPW in association with Utzon Architects designed a series of projects at the Sydney Opera House including the Utzon Room, the Western Colonnade, Western Foyers and access upgrade, the Box Office Toilet Refurbishment (designed by Richard Johnson and peer reviewed by Jørn Utzon) and the Vehicle Access and Pedestrian Safety Project – the creation of a new underground loading dock facility with a ramped service vehicle access at the southern edge of the Forecourt against the Tarpeian Wall.

The Strategic Building Plan is an ambitious undertaking that unlocks the ultimate potential of this unique cultural asset. In doing so it represents an appropriate and necessary way forward to ensure future viability and well being for the Sydney Opera House and the vision it embodies.

In 2005 Jorn Utzon and JPW prepared a design for the renewal of the Opera Theatre. The Gold Book, documenting Jørn Utzon’s vision for the rebuilding of the Opera Theatre, was presented by Jorn Utzon and JPW to the Sydney Opera House Trust in 2007.
